Chrome Bags Sultan
I purchased this bag last year together with my Fixie as a replacement for my Ortlieb Messenger Pro that finally have up the ghost after 15 years. I was looking for these features:
There were a few other manufacturers that have similar offerings; alas Chrome’s reputation for quality made that an easy decision
After using the bag almost daily on and off the bike, here are my findings:
Design & Practicality: 4.5/5
There is a loot of very clever features incorporated into the bag: Underneath that front flap you find a 2nd waterproof compartment that is perfect for a laptop. How do I know it’s waterproof? I have been caught twice last year in Denver’s notorious rainstorms with my PowerBook in the bag, I never noticed even so much of a drop of moisture in the compartment. The two outer pockets make it easy to store stuff in there you want to have quick access to, such as a U-lock or a spare inner tube. I had a little bit of water seepage into those pockets but this is because I didn’t close the flap all the way. The inner liner of the bag is a light grey so you can find your stuff even in less than ideal lighting conditions. The main compartment is essentially one big chamber, there are no dividers or adjusters to organize the contents a bit. I would like to see an inner compartment as well for things that are small and difficult to find in the bag, hence I am deducting a half point from the rating. Also, given the size of the bag, I am surprised that that there is no possibility to slide a waterbladder in there, although that is probably contrary to the waterproof design. On the outside are some loops for attaching a light so that you can be seen in the dark.
Materials & Workmanship: 5/5
It is incredible how well this bag is made. Materials appear to be first rate, stitching of the seams is impeccable. SOme of the hardware on the bag is made out of metal, the rest are standard buckles that can easily and cheaply replaced in case they brake.
I have used this bag for travel, shopping commuting and everything else in between and it still looks brand-new, minus the dirt I managed to get on.
I have no doubt this bag will last me at least as long as my Ortlieb, if not longer
Fit & Capacity: 5/5
This bag is huge! I can and have routinely been able to stuff enough groceries into the bag that it was difficult to lift it out of the shopping cart. In case you are planning a party, the bag will hold enough fermented barley pop containers for myself and a crowd of my semi-alcoholic friends. In between the shoulder straps, chest and hip strap it’s incredibly easy to find ann adjustment to comfortably carry the bag even if it is fully loaded. If it is empty or nearly empty, the bag sits pretty flat against your back, so there’s no feeling of bulk there. There’s a nice big padded section on the back of the bag, complete with channels for some airflow. All in all, this bag is supremely comfortable. You will get a bit warm in the summer since the bag essentially covers your whole back. I don’t see this as a flaw; it’s simply a result of the huge size. Besides, I have smaller backpacks that make me sweat more.
Summary
This is about as perfect of a bike-centric but still multi-use bag as I can think of. I have yet to find a situation the bag can’t handle, and frankly, I don’t expect to. My nit-pickings are small but could reasonably easy be addressed with a revision of the bag. MSRP of the bag is $170, and while that may sound high for a backpack, I find it a great deal. You are purchasing a product that is brilliantly designed, extremely well made and will hold up to years of use (and abuse) if my experience is any indication
In case you like the overall concept, but don’t usually take the kitchen sink with you, Chrome makes smaller bags in the same design and quality for less money

Do yo know where besides Chrome’s site or have any photos of the Sultan packed. I’m not sure if I want the Ivan or Sultan for my commuting. I plan on packing my work shoes (13’s),tools,pump and lunch. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks for the review. Tim
